One of the core principles of Islam is to align yourself with, and fight fiercely for, those who are most oppressed. One of the core principles of extremism is to believe you and your followers are the most oppressed (see Rush Limbaugh, rhetoric). It's no wonder why people are so confused about Islam. Muslims believe they are the most oppressed people (see: Palestine). To outsiders, Muslims and extremists are hard to distinguish.
